PETER HORN, Ed. D. believes that whatever is wrong with education can be fixed by what is right with education: the capacity of intelligent teachers, administrators, students, and other stakeholders to invent and implement tomorrow’s solutions to today’s challenges. Peter founded HornEd, LLC to assist in this process of inquiry, invention and change. HornEd, LLC offers customized research, program evaluation, and professional development to a range of K-12 schools and other learning organizations.
For 18 years as a classroom teacher, Peter taught all levels of secondary English Language Arts from English I and Basic Skills to AP Literature and AP Language. He was the first teacher in the history of the high school he served to win two career distinguished teaching awards. For four summers, Peter served as the lead literature instructor in the Princeton University Preparatory Program, working with bright students from low-income families in Ewing, Princeton, and Trenton. His curricular interests run the gamut from team-building exercises in physical education to authentic investigations in lab sciences.
As an administrator for seven years, Peter led a team of teachers in an award-winning alternative education program designed to reconnect resistant learners to school through an arts-infused interdisciplinary program of English, social studies, science, and mathematics. His innovative program welcomed visiting observers from throughout the northeastern United States, as well as educators from England, France, and Germany.
Peter believes schools can play a much more significant role in developing students as citizens. A champion of student voice, he sees students as essential yet generally undervalued actors in efforts to improve education. His research study “Missing Voices: How Students Describe Outstanding Teaching,” analyzed letters of recommendation by students of teachers who went on to win a prestigious teaching award. The paper was nominated for a prize from the American Educational Research Association.
Peter attended public K-12 schools in Buffalo, New York, where he graduated from City Honors School with an International Baccalaureate diploma. He earned a B.A. in Classical Greek and Latin from Princeton University, an M.A. in English Literature from Middlebury College, and a doctorate in Educational and Organizational Leadership from the University of Pennsylvania. Internationally, he has studied educational practice in Germany, Brazil, France, and the Dominican Republic.
When he is not imagining better ways to learn, he loves sitting at the piano and making music with his incredible wife Robyn.
