No Bad Food with Britt Schuman-Humbert

How is a nutritionist better than a diet book? What are signs that your not-yet-10-year-old may be developing an eating disorder? How does drinking the night before affect a morning workout? To answer these and many more questions, I met up with Britt Schuman-Humbert, a clinical dietitian with over 25 years of experience in the field of clinical nutrition. A graduate of Syracuse University who is board certified in pediatrics and sports nutrition, Britt holds additional certification in strength and conditioning. As a dietitian, she has worked with a wide range of clients and patients: from little kids and athletes to people living with cancer and diabetes and various kidney conditions. She came onto my radar through her fantastic YouTube series RD Unfiltered, where she walks viewers through recipes as delicious as they are nutritious. I’ve made her “Maximum Protein Mac ‘n’ Cheese” and “Air-Fried Chicken Wings Without the Air Fryer” (actual video titles). Robyn made her double chocolate peanut butter banana bread—even yummier, and far healthier than you imagine—which we both loved, pretty much inhaling it in two days. On today’s episode, we talk about Britt’s YouTube show after we discuss her day job as a clinical dietitian who collaborates with two mental health professionals at Oak City Psychology in Raleigh, NC, a practice that specializes in supporting people with eating disorders, as well as those who identify as LGBTQ+.

This episode’s video companion is an extra something special, featuring many of the stylistic flourishes known to fans of RD Unfiltered by that show’s producer, Greg Jackson:

Full disclosure: I consulted on hot sauce for Buffalo wings.

Music Notes

As always, thanks to Shayfer James for permission to use instrumental versions of “Weight of the World” (intro) and “Villainous Thing” (outro) for the show. More Shayfer here. Appearing in today’s soundtrack: “Cashmere” by Dylan Sitts, “Manhattanite” by Frook (RDU main theme), “Just a Cup of Coffee” by Raymond Grouse, “Leaves” by Ocean Jams, “Main Jack” and “Parisian Garden” by OTE, “Mystery by the Night” by The Waiting World, “Mi Dispiace” by Trabant 33, and “Parisian Street” by Berny Shepard.

Supplementary Materials

Inga Yanoski has written several powerful blog posts about families contending with an eating disorder. Here’s the one that prompted me to reach out to her about this episode.

Here’s a post I first shared in 2016, freshly updated with revised statistics and new resources.

This episode officially drops on the 50th birthday of NPR’s All Things Considered. Their new related podcast Consider This has recently done some fine reporting on issues affecting trans kids in particular. For an introduction:

The Washington University Transgender Center at St. Louis Children's Hospital is designed to be a safe and affirming space where kids and young adults can express who they are.
